HUD help

Does anyone know what could be wrong with my HUD?
There is no light coming up from the unit but I can hear the motor working when I use the up and down buttons. (1997 GTP)

Re: HUD help

There are 2 circuits at least on the HUD. One for the motor(from the dash positioning switch) and the other that reads the input from the PCM to display whatever. If the car has not had any electrical problems lately I would install a Bud HUD and if it works your is dead.

Thumbs up Easiest HUD fix

My HUD went out and I was totally bummed, so I went looking for information on the HUD. I found the easiest fix. I forget the web site that gave me the information, but a guy who worked at Pontiac said that a lot of cars were coming in for repair on the HUD. They were charging an arm and a leg for a new unit. He finally noticed that the problem was the photoeye or photocell. The problem is the soder joints are cracked or loose. All you have to do is re-soder the photocell's pins. And that is it. Mine works fine now. Thank god.

If you have a problem with the HUD dimming then this can fix your problem.

1. Remove HUD from car.
2. Remove 4 Torix screws from top of HUD
3. Remove ribbon cable and small 2-wire cable from circuit board.
4. Remove circuit board.
5. On the board there is a small photocell, the problem is that the cell has a cold solder joint. The cell is a 1/3-inch
Circle with a black square in the center. All you need to do is resolder the two legs.
6. Put everything back.

I was unable to find a replacement cell at radio shack. Monday I will look at a Digikey catalog and try to find the part.
The cell produces a small amount of voltage. The more light the more voltage. 0-.75 volts. Mt cell was working fine but the joint was loose. When the board heated up it lost the joint increased resistance to the point that the HUD lost the voltage reference.Hope this helps....~Larry~

Re: HUD help

Hi Gavilan! Welcome to AF!

I have never had to remove nor install an HUD in a vehicle before, so I cant be of much help.

Although, it may be easier and less confusing if you just start your own thread regarding HUD removal and replacement.
