My Fan Fell Off!!!

Anyone ever heard of or experienced their cooling fan, attached to the water pump pulley and fan clutch, completely seperating from their their water pump shaft??? This happen to me the other day at high RPM (4500-5000). It was kind enough to leave a nice hole in the radiator as well when it flew off Any info would be useful!! Thanks.

Re: My Fan Fell Off!!!

That's probably a one in a billion fluke.

Did the flange come off the pump assembly?

when i asked the service rep at chevy he said it happens all the time...i then proceded to laugh because us chevy owners are all in trouble if this is a reocurring problem.

anywho, not sure what you mean by "flange", the entire pulley assembly/fan clutch/fan decided to vacate the premises, right into my radiator, is what happen. Costed me about $400 to fix. Now I have a slightly smaller problem...my fan is EXTREMELY loud. Excessively loud, if you will, especially at high RPM. It literally sounds like a freight train when I'm on the gas. I'm thinkin the fan clutch may be no good. I've just decided to go with electric fans anyway. More horsepower is always good

Re: My Fan Fell Off!!!

the flange is the part on the water pump where the fan bolts thread into (or the studs come out of and the nuts thread onto)

It probably happens more often than one in a billion but I certainly wouldn't call it a common problem - even for a dealer service center

no flange on the 4.8L motors. the pulley is simply pressed on.

Re: My Fan Fell Off!!!

Another fine piece of GM engineering these days, sounds like. Anyway, replacement clutches are notorious for not slipping at all until they get several thousand miles on them for some reason. Sometimes you can drive a mile or so in second gear and get it to declutch.
