Is it the Fan Switch?

My 1992 Astro had the fan/blower quit working on me the other day. It has been going for some time, working intermittenly[sp?] and only on 2 speeds. Now it is completely non-functioning. I pulled the switch today to look at everything and sanded the brass contacts and put some dielectric grease in the plugs. No luck. There is still vacuum in the line when i pull them as well (I guess that is for vent selection, though). When I turn the switch on, regardless of if it is on heat or AC, the AC Compressor turns on. Here is my question, Is this the switch itself, a relay for the blower somewhere, or the Blower itself? I do not even know where to look for the relay...LOL. This van is only my daily driver, so I do not work on it much, but with the Hot summer coming fast I need to get this working again! PLease help.

Doing some searching on the net and it looks like that relay is also to turn on the AC compressor, is this right? If it is then it is good, because the compressor kicks on when the switch is hit. I am going to check it out anyway.....

Looks like you have two problems with your heater. One, it does not work. Turn the ignition on, with the heater on high, check for power at the motor. If you have power, replace the motor.
Second, your speed is controlled by the blower resistor, located next to the blower motor. replace it.
Good luck.

Thanks PCV. I will check this stuff out. What does the resistor look like? I am sorry for all the questions, I am not much of a vehicle electrician or anything...LOL. I Know my LT1 and Engine sensors like the back of my habd, but not this stuff!

Okay, the relay is good. I also have power going into the Motor (Purple wire). There is a 2nd wire on the motor that I suspect is a ground (black), but their is power coming from it and it appears the wire has melted. I am no electrician so I am clueless, is there supposed to be power coming out from there?

The 'blower resistor', where is it? All i see is the Motor on the box.

that means you are loosing ground to blower motor
so run another ground wire to blower

Re: Is it the Fan Switch?

okay, I got the Blower to come on. It only works on one speed setting (the 2nd to hightest). This is from a bad resistor? I gues the resistor is the place where the power plugs into the blower? How do you replace it? I looked at a new Blower assembly and it comes with this, so do i need the whole blower motor?

Re: Is it the Fan Switch?

lol..one more...lol... I found the resistor (on the airbox, about 8 inches from the motor). Looks like I have to go to the Dealer to get it, unless somebody know a place?

Re: Is it the Fan Switch?

Yeah, I ordered it today. For anybody else's future reference, it is part number -------- and was $21.46! No hookups from my local dealer. GMPartsDirect was almost $19 after shipping, so no biggie. Should be here in a few days and hopefully everything will work well again.

Disregard that Part Number! I got the part today and it was wrong. the actual number i think was on the part. I always goto the dealer with the part number and they give me crap about 'Not having the VIN'. They think that they can always get the right part with the VIN, not this time! They are getting the right part on Order and I should have it soon.
