Power steering.

Is power steering supposed to be helpful for drifting? I mean it would help with control and straightening out and the like. I wonder because the fc i wanna buy doesnt have it and i wonder if this is a hinderance or not.

Well, speaking as someone who owns and drifts a car with rack & pinion/no assist steering, I can tell you that if you're willing to deal with the added effort you'll have to put out in steering, then you'll love the added feel manual steering offers up.

Seriously, without power steering, so much more of the road and the attitude of the car is transmitted through the wheel. Parking lot manuevers may become a bit of a bitch, but once you feel how connected you are with what the car is doing you'll probably never go back. Plus you'll start complaining about how vague and sloppy the cars with power steering you drive are.

my FC has powersteering and I don't have any trouble with it pulling itself back too soon or anything, but I've never done it without powersteering, but I've driven a car without power steering(my friends 86 camaro) I don't like it much, not just the effort but just that it feels all low tech like the car is a junker to me... but thats just what I think, don't set it in stone or anything

it's really all about what you're used to. But in cases like the new BMW 3 series, over-boosted power steering can almost kill a car in an enthusiasts eyes. Almost like automatic transmissions.

When I drive my mom's '91 318i, the engine makes me forget the power steering after a time, but after my 2002's direct and positive steering feedback and feel, the power assist in my mother's car makes it feel kinda foofy. But, you do get used to it, and BMW had a handle on PS for a while.

Several different ones, as a matter of fact, including the bog-standard S13 chassis Nissan.

The difference in steering for drift is the same as the difference in any performance driving; without power steering, low speed steering is heavy as is steering under braking, while steering at speed and under acceleration lightens considerably. There is much more feedback through the steering wheel and steering is much more direct, often requiring fewer turns lock to lock. However, it does require more effort.

Okay. Well anway i think i could get power steering IF i wanted it, since there's a junk fc not too many blocks away from me.
