ok so i didnt check here first but i changed my tranny fluid and i just used 80w90 yea everyone is sayiong to use regular motor oil so have i done any damage its been kinda hard to shift but not like grinding or anything

no dude theres no damage, some dumbass did this to my tranny too (not that youre a dumbass), just drain it and use either 10w-30 or 10w-40. I recomend 10w-40. You lose alot of torque (well i did) with that 80w-90. After like a week change the oil again to make sure you get most of the 80w-90 out, if youre too worried about it.

I forgot to ask, why does everyone put 80w-90 in their trannys anyways, my friend bought one from the junkyard for his integra ls and it had 80w-90 in it too. My dad uses that stuff in his thunderbirds rear-end, which is what its supposed to be for.

because domestic car owners tell them to, and most mechanics are domestic car owners. what i find ridiculous is that modern domestic cars dont even use gear oil in their manual transmissions. camaros and firebirds use AUTOMATIC FLUID in theirs. so my guess is all these old timers who drove 60s/70s muscle cars tell everyone that manual trannys need gear oil.

BTW, the very best oil to use in a honda manual transmission is MTF from honda. i know it sounds foolish, but its better than anything else. i had a slight grind going into third on my S1 tranny, and i replaced the oil with 10w30. still there. then i tried synthetic, still there. then i tried Redline. still there. used honda MTF, and it disappeared. stuff isnt too expensive, but luckily i was working for acura at the time and got a case of it for employee prices.

before we changed the transmission fluid i couldnt spin shifting to 2nd, and if i was in say 3rd going 25 i could stomp it and it would take forever to get to 40 (where i usually shift to 4th when im tryin to get somewhere) now I get plenty more torque and my car doesnt feel like such a weakling compared to my friends' integras.

now i can spin when i shift from 1st to 2nd at 3000 rpms. all i gotta do is pop the clutch. definately get rid of that 80w-90 dude. Youre missing out on the pep that our cars have.

how can you tell if you have grinds on your gears anyways? I didnt know you could get rid them.

ditto! i used the Honda MTF and it was the best thing i did. it has a couple special additivies in it apparently, (or so i was told)

i was wondering, can u add a little bit of 80w90 to it? would it make it not grind as much if u have a little bit of 80w90 mixed with honda mtf in there?

if you shift with any power, and you notice its a little harder to put into third, or if you hear it make a ch-chunk sound, or a grrrrr sound, then your synchros are wearing out, and thats what the sound is. the synchros are made of brass, and the rest of the transmission innards are hardened steel. so they wear out.

the reason that MTF is better is because it has some additives, im assuming that these additives stick to the brass better and allow the shifts to slide easier.

BTW, dont quote me on anything, the transmission ASE tests are the only two i havent passed yet.......even though i have rebuilt a few trannys before

man, when i pulled apart my tranny i didnt see any brass syncros, everything looked like hardened steel?!?!?!

most people wouldnt see it at first either. when looking at the gearset on the output shaft, theres going to be shift forks that are slipped over these steel rings. the shift forks move those steel rings onto different gears when you shift. the brass synchros are partially under the rings, and between the gears. when you shift, the synchro will get completely covered by the steel ring.

thanks alot but yea my boss said gear oil and him being a mechanic and into hot rods since the 50's i figured i might as well take his wordbut i think you guys cant drive too well if you cant scratch second cuz i do it all the time even with the shitty gear oil lol just kidding thats just technique but thanks for the advice i dont know what i'd do with out a message board like this

another quick question what can i do to stop my tranny from leaking oil cuz i've noticed a slight drip

you can try an additive that will slow the leaks, but the only real fix is to seperate the two transmission case pieces and redo the hondabond gasket
