The CRX's you are asking about have D16A6 engines including the Si. Their horsepower was around 100-110 for most of those years. I believe some of the JDM CRX's had b16's in them stock.

would it be easy to build up one of those engines, or do an engine swap?
If an engine swap, which engine would be best, for a low budget
thanx

I would suggest a swap because I haven't had any real luck finding any aftermarket parts for a d16 besides Intake Header and Exhaust. The most common swap done now is a B16, and that usually runs between $2000-$3000 for the full swap (That's about 160hp and VTEC). The cheapest swap would be a ZC motor which I think has about 130HP, but I believe is the easiest motor to swap in and costs around $1000-$1500 for the full swap. Bottom line is that B16 would be the best choice because of it's huge aftermarket support, and higher HP.
