94 Cutlass turn signal switch

How do you remove the turn signal switch on a 94 Cutlass Supreme? I removed the steering wheel and got the switch out, but the wiring goes down through the steering column and plugs into a harness. Does anyone know if special tools are required for further tear down of the steering shaft? Or does the wiring and connector come out without further tear down.

Also, how do you replace the tilt-wheel lever, this was broken off and looks pretty involved to replace.

You need to pull the pins out of the connector. I used a jewellers screwdriver to get at the pin to depress the lock on it.

No, No, No ... sorry to step on your answer llst, but the way to remove the wires it to first find the large connector under the dash. The connector is screwed together, remove the nut and pull the connector apart.

The ID the wires that run from the turn signal to the connector and remove them by squeezing the sides of the connection.
If you remove the plastic comb, no harm, you will see that that did nothing, it is a keeper and a tension guard.

Next obstacle, pulling it through the steering column.
There is a flat bar that is welded under the column that the wire passes through. It will look like the long plastic connector, that you just unplugged, will not pass through but turn it long ways and it will go through with ease.

Rerunning the wire back through is actually easier than disassembly.

I had to purchase the whole column from the junkyard just for the turn signal mechanism. That is also how I discovered the procedure.

Well I must have missed the fact that you could slide it up and through. I was working on our 92 and maybe it is a little different. Sure wish I would have been able to do it as you describe as it would have been a lot simpler.

I have had more problems, the antilock light keeps coming on. Traced it to poor contacts on the signal switch. I didn't realize you could pull the two halves of the switch apart. When you look at the switch. it looks like the two pieces are rivited together. I cleaned up the contacts and retension the spring wiping contacts and it seems to be working fine for the past week.
