Major Problems On My 1996 Jetta Trek- Need Advice

Hi all,

I live in long beach, Long Island. I have a 1996 jetta trek (gl I
believe) which is in need of fixing tomorrow. I am a musician and use
my car to work all the time. I find the authorized dealers are a
little more than i can afford. If there is anyone that is able to fix
my car I will be glad to pay them for there time.

Here are my problems

#1 The easy part that i know is I have a short in my car. The fuse
that connects the sun roof and cigarette lighter keeps blowing.

#2 I had my heating core replace 4 months ago and when the mechanic
replaced it, my stock alarm stopped working. The key that disables
and arms the alarm on the driver's side does not work anymore. The
alarm is still active and I have to reset it buy taking the wires or
the battery and then restart the car. Also after the heating core
was replaced I still seem to loose radiator fluid and i just refill
it every now and then. Any ideas?

#3 The big problem - My car is now bucking and sometimes stalling
when I hit the gas hard or just accelerating strongly. I hope this
isn't a transmission problem. I had a check engine light which I had
diagnosed 3 months ago. The diagnostics said to replace the E.V.A.P.
sensor. Does anyone know if this is related? Any Idea's?

I've had a lot of work on my car done recently. I've been upset that
after paying alot of money for the loan I have to fix all these
problems. Maybe some of these problems are related?

Any advice or help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Re: Major Problems On My 1996 Jetta Trek- Need Advice

1. Is it fuse 21 that is blowing?\

2. Sounds unrelated, possibly the door switch has gone bad. Look at the wires where they travel between the door & body inside a rubber boot. They will often fray/break at this point. The alarm system frequently fails. i can tell you how to disable it if you decide that's the way you want to go. Have the cooling system pressure tested to try to find the leak. Do you still smell coolant in the car?

3. What was the code number they pulled?

Yes its fuse 21 that keeps blowing out everytime i put a fuse in it. I dont have the error code for the evap.
I will goto autozone and find out if the code is still reading out on the car.
I dont want to diasable the alarm.
I put dry gas in today and ran the car idle for a hour. I notice the anit freeze fluid below the anti freeze resivor. I watch it for a while but can't see it dripping from anywhere.
I can take a pict of the engine though if its needed.
I also check the armpit or boot on both side and all the wires looked ok and nothing was split. I didnt rip open the door. I could try that if I saw a pict. guide.

Any ideas?

Thanks for responding

Hi there,
Saw your response a few months ago to this, and I was wondering if you'd be able to help me out. I've got a '94 Jetta and the alarm has become very annoying, going off at totally random times for no reason at all. I will check the ground wires in the door armpits as you suggested to the other person, but I'm really looking to disable the alarm altogether. All it ever does is go off when it's not supposed to. Would you be able to explain to me how to disable it? Thanks a bunch-

The module is located behind the dash on the left side, it has two connectors - one 6 pin and one 10 pin. To diable, disconnect the connectors and run a suitable size jumper wire between pins #5 & #6 of the six pin connector (so the starter works).
