Question Problems with the Engine Pulleys

Yesterday i noticed than my GTP was making a ugly sound in the engine bay. I've checked it and noticed than the main pulley is brocken (bottom and big pulley taking the 2 belts SC&Acc), i dont know the correct name. The center of the pulley is a plastic material. Are a aftermarket replacement or lightweight replacement for this?? Or i need to go with the GM Dealer?.

Thanks

that pulley is your crank pulley. i don't know if you can get an aftermarket pulley, but zzperformance will lighten the stock pulley. so it might be something that you need a dealer to do. i do believe if a different pulley is used, a CASE learn must be done. this takes a computer to do. if i were you, id see how much a dealer would charge to fix.

Re: Problems with the Engine Pulleys

The correct name of the broken piece is Crankshaft Balancer. GM Dealer says me that is the correct name and the price is $160+tax. By Internet, (gmpartsdirect.com) are in about $85+tax dlls. But i want to know if ZZP or other company make this balancer more lightweight or something to give more performance.

Thanx

Re: Problems with the Engine Pulleys

That is the damper(Crankshaft Balancer). It has no plastic, It has 2 metal parts with a rubber interface between them. This is used to lower the engine vibration due to the cranckshaft rotation. To replace you would need a puller. I do not think a case relearn is necessary since if you install one that is ligther but has the same diameter you would be fine. It has a notch so it has a fixed position to install on the crankshaft and the cost for the OEM is around ~160. Is not that hard to install.

Re: Problems with the Engine Pulleys

Ok, in www.gmpartsdirect.com cost me 84.60 + shipping. 1/2 price less than the Dealer.

Another question Kilroypr. Why this pulley broken? Use? Race?. I have a photo of my broken pulley, i will submit it.

Thanx

Re: Problems with the Engine Pulleys

Ahh, and the pulley make a ugly noise with is idle. The mechanic says me than the ugly noise come from inside of the pulley (balancer), is that true?

Thanx a lot again! =)
