noise when full stop

Hi there,

I have a 2002 impala 3.4 L and have 3 questions:

1) The car makes a deep "clunk" sound when i come to a full stop.
It sounds as if something in the trunk is lurching forward - but theres nothing in the trunk?

2) If I use premium gas (91 octane) is that bad for my engine?

3) can i change the iar filter myself, i cant even find the housing?

Thanks

Re: noise when full stop

you can't find the iar filter because there is no such thing. if you can't find the air filter i dont think you should be working on your own car.
as for your clunking it is probably your brain smacking the front of your skull. as for the gas there is no reason to run high octane gas in that car because the computer is tuned to run on lower octane so you would be wasting your money.

Re: noise when full stop

Sweetleaf,

Not sure where about the filter or the effects of 91 octane but I have noticed a a noise like you described that I was attributing to fuel sloshing in the tank (??) but maybe it's soemthing else.

Also, will your 02's tranny hold the car from rolling back when sitting in drive at a light on a slight incline? My 04 will roll back when you take your foot off the brake. This is the first car I've owned with an automatic that will do this (my 03 2500HD Duramax/Allison will start rolling up hill in drive unless I have my foot on the brake).

previous to the impala, i had a 3.1 L pontiac grand prix which would roll back when on a slight incline, while on drive, unless i applied the brakes.
i was told by a mechanic that this was not usual but was not a serious problem. Other than that I experienced no problems at all with that cars tranny.
as for the sound, yeah its like something heavy from the rear of the car is lurching forward.

thanks for the non-salad-head replies!
