Re: reliable engine swappers in MA

Not to be a smart ass, but, I have minimal auto experience, I haven't finished sch, but swapping motors is not really that hard. If you are trying to swap a KA thats simple, if a japanese like RB or SR, and it comes with the wiring and ECU, you can do it at home. I paid someone to swap my SHO engine and it costed me $500. I did mine on my Firebird fomula in my garage, I wouldnt even charge any one more than $400 if it is just replacing, or $800 if I had to route wiring, unless you going to use the 240s' harness then that becomes $$$$$$.
My advice, spend little extra, get the harness and ECU with the motor, then it becomes easy. Grab some sixpacks call you friends, and you have your Auto-Party. Thats how we do it here in ATL, we did it when putting a clutch in my bird, swapped a 350 motor out of a cutlass, tranny in a caprice, and the only cost was the beer.

Re: reliable engine swappers in MA

that is a good idea to do it myself, but the only problem would be that i ahve a 1990 240sx and will need to move the resivior for the power steering as well as adjsut my ac, i will need extra time for this and do not want to leave an engineless car in m,y drive way, i also dont have a carrige to take it out, as well as the fast that i have 0 idea on wiring, i could figure it out, but would rather pay extra to do it, i have putr nearly everthing on a car in my driveay except and engine, and those are my reasons
but still good thought

Re: reliable engine swappers in MA

For those that have done SR swaps, how reliable is the tutorial on SWSWAPS.com? Do they give you enough information? I'm planning to do the job (if it looks realistic) with my friends rather than spend extra money and time having someone else do it.

Re: reliable engine swappers in MA

ive never done one, but two of my clsoe friends have done them themselves on 2 91's they had a perfect garage though cuz it took a few days more than expected because of wiring, if you have a good garage and a 91 or above i would say go for it yourself, becuase i helped with that other one, but on mine (1990) wont risk it and would rather have a shop do it

Re: reliable engine swappers in MA

I understand you Jd, I have the tools I need, engine crane, and a compressor among others, without these it can be tidious cause you have to mount it from the bottom too.
But on the wiring, get the wiring with the ECU, and as much of it as you can, this will mean that all they need to figure out is splicing the accecories to the harness like windows etc, which will save them time and you money.
