Sloppy Shifter???

I was wondering just how much play is normal in a VR-4 shifter, I know that it is a cable shifter and it is going to be pretty sloppy compared to a driect "ontop" of the tranny shifter, direct linkage. But, When I am in gear, I can move my shifter around very freely almost, I can hit every gear, its just annoying and very odd, because its soooo sloppy. What is the normal sloppyness of VR-4 shifter? Is there anyway to have the sloppyness cleaned up a lil bit? Like will a short shifter help? or is it simply an adjustment under the shift boot, on the linkage? any suggestions? Does anyone have the new 3SX short shifter, is it good or no? Thanks for all the help, please help? lol

That doesn't sound right, my cars never had that much play in them. I don't have an answer for your questions, but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

How sloppy is your shifter Yog's? whats it like in each and every gear, how much play does it have up, down, left, right? i would apreciate it greatly.

One with hella incredibly movement even when it is engaged in a gear, like movement up, down, left, right. Fucking cable shifter crap, its soooo weird, and nasty. Go shift on a direct linkage tranny, like any rear wheel drive car like a camaro or vette or anything like that, supra, w/e. So firm, no play in the shifter, zero movement, once its engaged its there, no play. Cable shifters, hella play and movement all the time.

I can move the stick around a few inches (other then out of gear). However, it snaps back pretty sharply. It doesn't have free reign either. When in reverse it has very little play. Third has the most (given the position, thats to be expected). But I rarely, if ever have missed a shift because of the play in there.

It could also be that our cars are exactly the same and what is really sloppy for you isn't so much for me. You should see how sloppy my old Sentra felt - the VR4 is a dream in comparison

HAHAHA, thats very true, im just not yet used to my car or its cable shifter, im used to direct link rear wheel drive trannys, thats a positive "locked" in gear feely, no movement, Im going to get a short throw shifter, and under hood and under shifter DSM brass bushings kits, supposedly with the kit and shifter, It will feel like a direct link tranny. I guess its not that sloppy, just not used to it at all. Thanks again.

I have very little play with the shifter when it's in gear. VERY little play. The shifter doesn't want to move much. After reading this earlier today I fooled around with it in 3rd gear and had very little movement when it was in gear. I don't know if this helps or not. I find I have more sloppiness with the clutch.
