Engine Vin codes??
I saw an 80's style Caprice for sale. The 8th digit's a J and the 10th's is a C. What year and engine is in it? What's the 8th digit for 350's, 305's, and V6's?

Re: Engine Vin codes??
'79-'80 had a shorter vin than '81 and up. The engine code would be the 6th# and the model year would be the 7th#.
If it's a '81 and up, it would be a 1982 with a 267 ci. (or 4.4L) with a 2 barrel carb. It is rated at 115hp at the flywheel. If you're trying to find a '80 style Caprice, look for a '85 or newer. They have a little more hp thanks to a better head design and a stronger cam. Hope that helps!

Well I'd like to get an early 80's (pre-84) so I can take the cats off legally. The Vin looked like a standard newer vin # length-wise.
