Timing Chain needed replaced on a 2001!

This is a friends Cavalier. It's a 2001 with 38,000 miles. Died on the freeway so she had it towed to the dealer who told her the timing belt was broken. It's 2,000 miles out of warranty and they are charging her $2600 to replace the chain. Guess they told her the engine needed to be removed. Doesn't sound right to me, what you guys think?

Get yourself another quote!

According to the manual, (Haynes)it is a involved process, but certainly doesn't require the motor to be removed. Get a book at the library, and see for yourself. Remove the coolant tank, drivebelt, front engine mount, crankshaft balancer, then the cover.

I haven't done one on this car, but as long as you get your timing marks lined up, this doesn't seem to hard to do in an afternoon.

timing chain

I have a 99 chev cav and within the first 6 mo's of having the car i noticed a noise...tappin..when taking the car in i told them about the noise...they indicated.. they did not detect a noise (hogwash) but the person at the desk said he would include the complaint in the work order so if there should be a problem later it would be covered under the warranty....and as time went on and more complaints.and their reply..no problem...and other ppl telling me "sounds like you need an oil change (just had one) or "sounds like you got a diesel"
so after that problem was fixed and i got the car back...i began to have a problem with the a/c. Worked fine until i stopped at a signal light or had to stop for road work...after about 30-50 seconds i would hear a click and then the a/c would put out moist sauna like air. I hot weather i would just turn it off and in winter when running the defrost.. the car would fog up terribly..so i took the car in and said there is this problem. They told me it was the compressor and i complained that it started after they did the timing chain job...needless to say
My father (a retired mechanic) told me that it shouldnt be the compressor if it cools. someone else who is certified in refrigeration/ac's told me they may have over charged the a/c.....

at any rate.. the timing chain was fixed free of charge.
