Why are my lights dimming?

I've got a '98 Civic w/ no mods and when it idles my lights dim, then get brighter, then dim, back and forth. What causes this and what can I do to fix it? If I put a system in it, will the problem get worse?

Sounds to me like your alternator might not be worrking at it's full potential. I'd have that checked out first thing. Also check all your grounds, that can cuase that as well.

It will get worse and eventually kill your altenator. The best thing to do would be to upgrade it before you fry it. I put a system in my accord and was running about 1,000 RMS in there with a few neon lights as well, 2-3 months later I had to replace my altenator.

even if you don't upgrade your alt, you should replace your battery ground, valve cover ground and alt to + to 4 gauge wiring. You will see a difference I guarantee it. If you do upgrade your alt, you're going to have to upgrade your alt to + wire to something that is atleast 4 gauge. But you should upgrade the other two wires while you're at it.
