please help, 2 problems
I have a '98 altima 5 spd and have 2 questions...
Whenever the clutch engaged(clutch pedal is released) i hear a hiss, like water running through a pipe. The hiss disappears when the clutch is realeased(clutch pedal is pressed to the floor), and then returns again when the clutch pedal is released. The hiss gets louder the higher i rev, and it appears both at idle and during driving. The tranny has new fluid in it, but the person before me didnt fill it up at all. The tranny takes 5 quarts, when i drained it, it had about 2. any theories will be appreciated, thanks in advance. second question is: how do i remove acrylic off of abs plastic without melting the plastic? There were a few parts of the interior trim painted yellow on this car, and i want to get it removed. thanks again. - Robert |

for the first questin: you are hearing the throwout bearing spinning. quiet ones are longer lasting than noisy ones...

Quote:
Bad throwout bearings are noisy when the clutch pedal is pushed down. In this case, its noisy when the pedal is released. I think its the transmission input shaft bearings. A transmission can last a long time with a noisy bearing, but I would suggest a bearing replacement before the bearing destroys itself and damages other expensive internal components. |

how hard/how much would a transmission input shaft bearing cost to replace. I can do a clutch myself, but i have never gone farther.
