Re: Painting Chrome parts?
If you want to strip the chrome off entiely just soak it in some bleach overnight. The chrome will come right off, leaving just a clear coat on the plastic that the manufacturers use to bond the chrome to the part. That can be reomved with any of the usual suspects for removing paint.
If you just want to detail paint a section of a chromed part then there shouldn't be too much of a problem. |

In that case, if you are worried then scuff up the area to give the paint something to grip to.

For painting chrome parts, I use only clear or metallic paints. Yeah, they don't stick all that well either, but they look better. To make things easier, I like to place a little paint on a sheet of paper, let it sit for a couple minutes so that it begins to cure a little, then use a brush to apply it to the chrome part. The paint is a lot stickier then, so it's easier to apply it. You may have to do it to or three times to cover the whole part , just give it a few more minutes between coats.
Oh, this works great if you're trying to give your part that "powdercoated" look. It's fairly easy to do, I got it right on my first try. However, I would suggest trying it on a piece of chrome parts tree first, just to make sure you get the look you're going for (especially if you're going to try this on a set of wheels). I think clear acrylic paints and Testors metallic paints work the best. This technique works on chrome foil and chrome painted parts, too. My 200th post, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

You have to remove the chrome and the clear coat underneath. Some paints will react with the clearcoat if not removed. Use oven cleaner and the chrome and clear coat will be removed in 5-10 min., rinse thoroughly and you are ready to paint.

Ok, sorry about that. I didn't mean to make it sound like I was calling you a whore, I was just saying that I don't post that much, but I'm not a newbie.
