1g intake stuff for 2gs
I really haven’t been schooled in the logics of engine compartment =), so my question may appear seemingly simple, but remains unanswerably complicate due to my unintentional handicap for simple mechanics. I have managed to pick up that the 1g 60mm throttle body is much larger then the 53 or 54mm 2nd generation throttle body, there by improving the capacity of pressurized air entering the intake from the intercooler pipes. I’ve also seen pictures of the 1st & 2nd generation intake manifolds side by side, and can see measurable differences in the diameter of the induction chambers (no idea what their called, just a guess) that flow into the head. With out first hand knowledge im relying on forums, and dsm links to understand the 4g63 turbocharged engine and its potentials. From what I’ve heard there is an obvious head differences between the two generations (not so obvious to me) that can produce a staggering 40 horsepower difference if properly swapped (is that including 1st g throttle body and intake). Now my deal is, I have a 96 gsx and im not really interested in pulling my heads off. Mainly because, honestly i don’t know how, and im afraid to. So, my question is... is it feasible to replace my throttle body and intake manifold with the 1st generations? Supplied by my local buddy at the wrecking yard for a price of $50 for both TB & Intake that have that lager flow capacity? Or will there be a bottleneck problem anyway between the intake and head where I wont notice any change in combustion or horsepower? I just don’t know this stuff, sorry.

Is runners the word your looking for?
40 hp, i doubt it. I have not heard of using the intake manifold too, but I know that the TB can be used.

Re: 1g intake stuff for 2gs
People have measured a 3 lbs/min increase when going to the 1g head/intake/TB. Good for about 30 HP, so 40 isnt too far off
But you are correct in assuming that there will be trouble where the 1g intake meets the 2g head. There is a very quick and simple way to swap the heads without having to do a timing belt job, but if you're not comfortable doing it then I wont recomend even the easy version (also known as the RRE method). Plus you will have to run a 1g cam angle sensor for 95-96 cars, which brings on all the random misfire CEL headaches of a full 1gina2g swap which then requires some fancy foot work with a baro wire mod and AFC, or DSMlink. I think the next best thing would be to open up the 2g intake to 60mm and run a 1g TB, or get a magnus 2g sheetmetal intake (bling bling and $$ $$), which may even have an option to come setup for 1g TB. I would go one of those two routes if youre the handy type and it makes sense at your particular point in the modding process.

Re: 1g intake stuff for 2gs
yeah, i read about that misfire problem, where its nessusary to minipulate the fireing cycle, and use a 1g cam angle sensor. thats basicly why the swaps not for me. so, that answers my question, the 3lb increase was with 1g tb, intake, and heads. why do you recomend porting the the 2g intake manifold rather then swapping it for a 1g? is their a fitting issue? i'll look into the RRE. With using a larger TB, i can only guess that insted of using 2g upper inercooler pipeings, i'll need to use1g becasue of the TB, right?
