Air vs Water cooled

I was just curious i have heard that porsche enthusiasts prefer the air cooled motors over the water cooled mainly because porsche has been known for their air cooled motors is this true or is this way off?

Re: Air vs Water cooled

I agree with the hacker, the sound of a air cooled flat six is very unique. The water cooled version "996" just doesn't sound the same. "The" sound is more than the exhaust note. The engine emits mechanical sounds itself, that would otherwise be dampened by the coolant in the water jackets of the cylinders and heads.
