battery trouble

good morning to everyone out there
i am new to the site and i have a dilemma. last night the battery went out on girlfriends 98 ford zx2. i cleaned the cables already this morning but the battery is not holding a charge and i was wondering if anyone has been able to take their old battery out themselves or did they have to go to the nearest for dealership to do so? i have already disconnected the pos/negative cables and the battery wont budge. thanks to anyone that reads and i appreciate any info returned to me
