rattlin'

Alright, my friend has a prob with his '95 accord. It has been making this horrendous rattling noise while driving. The rattling noise sounds like metal to metal rattling (paper clip in a can) kind of rattling. Anyway, it comes on every now and then, but more often than not. It seems to be coming from under the car or hood on the driver side. You can really hear it while just cruising, and it seems to begin right after he exceeds 2k rpm in 2nd....if anyone has any idea of where it's coming from or what it is, he'd really appreciate...peace

Re: rattlin'

Mine does the same thing, but it stops when you let off the gas or when accelerating harder. It didn't happen until I put my new exhaust on and I believe it is one of a few things. It could be a loose nut or bolt shaking from exhaust vibrations, or possibly a gasket that doesn't seal property and exhaust is escaping past it causing more vibration than necessary. I was also thinking it could be the catalytic converter... I need to inspect the exhaust to determine the problem, but I am fairly sure that it is something between the cat (if not the cat itself) and the rear section pipe (so basically just along the B-pipe) since the noise seems to be coming from that area. I'd check the heat shield over the cat as well to make sure it is secure. Hope this helps!

Re: rattlin'

I'll make another run thru with the cat and exhaust again I guess, cause I know the shields are pretty secure....thanks for the help bro.

Re: rattlin'

Check the clearance between the heat shields and the exhaust. If they are too close then when you rev the engine the torque of the engine will move the exhaust pipe into contact with the heat shields. Also check that the exhaust manifold bolts are tight but I am betting you have a heat shield rattle.

Re: rattlin'

heatshields on the exhaust manifold and catalytic convertor should be tightened or removed. Common problem.
