Not Starting

OK, i have a 83 cross fire Z-28 that is having its issues. When cold, the motor starts fine, but if i drive it to where the motor warms up to normal temp, then shut off the car long enough for the motor to cool down some, then try and start it again, it wont start. It cranks but won't start. If i shoot starter fluid down the throttle body it starts almost instantly and is fine running after that. (till i stop it again and it goes through it all again) I know that starter fluid is not good for your car, but its better than being stuck somewhere. If you have any suggestions as to what it could be, please throw it out there, even if it isn't right, it would be much appreciated.

is there any drivability issue's such as a lag or stall when it is running? i had a problem similar to this on a suburban where the guy would have to shoot starting fluid down the throttle body after it was warmed up a bit. turned out that the fuel pump was goin out, and was only puttin out 7psi. or it could be some kind of a vapor lock problem. check all the basics first like plugs and wires, sometimes bad plugs will have a thermal problem where after there warmed up they dont like to fire. try turning on the ingnition and wait about 10 seconds till the fuel pump relay clicks and turns the fuel pump off, then try starting it.

i have been hoping it isn't the fuel pump, but what you say about it kinda might sound right, cuz if i'm in neutral or park, and i hit the gas (hard), it just about stalls out at first, then revs up, but if in gear i think the whole pushing everything gives it the neccesary time to catch up without any hessitaion, if that makes sense. (the motor doesn't rev up as fast cuz there is resistance now as opposed to not in gear). otherwise i did cap and rotor and plugs last year.

i got the same problem im hoping its my fuel pump well actually i know it is , it could be your carb too
but if your fuel pump is on your block it shouldnt be too hard to change

fuel filter, check. wasn't expecting that to be at the front of the motor, that threw me off. and as for the pump being on the block, arn't they in the tank???

Anyone else have any sugestions that may help me, i'm trying to isolate the problem. Which is the better fuel pump... the TBI or TPI? i dunno.

ya it's in the tank, carburated engines have em on the pass side of the block. a tp fuel pump is too much pressure for a cross fire. but you could install one if you used a regulator, then you could adjust it where you want it.
