Door keypads are dead

On '92 4-door, after noticing keypads on driver and passenger side didn't work, attempted to open with key on driver side. Opening door set off alarm and wouldn't allow car to start. (Car purchased from owner who didn't supply manual, only the code to unlock the door.)

Could not disable alarm system. Eventually pulled the Anti-Theft fuse.

While fuse was still out car started, but after locking door and attempting to unlock and open from driver side the alarm went off again (with the fuse still out). After unlocking, locking, unlocking and opening the passenger side the alarm quit.

I'd like to have use of the keypads back.

Any clues?
