Question 1988 jimmy slow to kick into overdrive

hey! my dad has an 88 jimmy s15. it is unimaginably slow to kick into overdrive. i was thinking it could be anything. he believes it is the cad. converter. could someone help me out with an idea or two of why it takes so long to kick in? thanks alot guys appreciate it!

Could it be the detent cable?
