bad Bearings

My 2000 Windstar is making a humming noise from the front right wheel. at first i figured it was just road noise with newer tires that i have, but i've soon realized that it's the bearings. anyone ever change them before? if so, how? i've got a general idea, but i can't afford to have my van out of service for too long, so it has to be done asap.

Had both front bearings changed on my '99. Should be not more than a half-days work. Except if shop has only 1 mechanic working on 4 vehicles at the same time.

Hi Steve

I have changed the bearing on one side due to vibration/noise. It is a big job as the steering knuckle must be removed and the bearing/hub pressed out/in at a machine shop or dealership. My local Ford guys charged 40 for the pressing in of the new bearing and did it while I waited. I would say I spent around an 90 min. each on disassembly and re-assembly.

My bearing was damaged because the hub nut on the end of the CV half-shaft worked loose and I didnt realize it until it had done itself in.

When taking the hub nut off you should replace it with a new hub nut. The OEM hub nut has a 'locktite' type of material onn the threads that will keep it from threading off.
