Cheap Mods for a Cavi
hey all, im the proud owner of a 92 Cavi RS. so far ive put a V-Spec wing on, a bowtie decal on the rear window, put a K&N Air filter on, Cherry Bomb Turbo muffler and low pro tires on 17 inch rims. the cars not on the road yet as i need to weld in the rocker panels and put the head back together. what else can i do that aint gunna cost too much to up the performance?

Re: Cheap Mods for a Cavi
What else for performance? Heh.
Ya ain't done nuthin' to it for "performance" yet. Stickers and plastic don't count. A wing is useless on a FWD car-ya don't need downforce on wheels that are just along for the ride. It may look pretty cool, but all it does is add a drag coefficient. Not tryin' to bust ya bubble or disrespect ya, but if yer gonna do perf mods-ya need to do some more like engine work. I dunno what engine ya got in there, but more'n likely it's a 2.0L L4, seein' as ya mentioned a "head" and not "heads". (Oh, yeah...make damn sure you use LOTS of assembly lube-like multiple tubes of it when reassembling the valve train components-coat the cam journals and lobes real goodly with the stuff-and the rocker arms as well-pre-soak the lifters for like a week in clean engine oil before you install them or the dry-start syndrome will saw the rockers in half and wipe out the cam in the first 20-minute break-in period when you have to keep the revs above 1000). There is a turbo setup that works well on the 2.0-but you'll have to figure out a way to lower your compression ratio to avoid detonation with the boost. You'll also have to figure out how to fool the ECM into thinking that what's happening with the engine under boost conditions is normal so it doesn't think there's a problem and compensate-negating the effect and making it run like crap. You'd also have to install an intercooler and the extra oil line and the various turbo support components (salvaged from a turbo-equipped 2.0). Then there is the blower option. Same idea with the comp ratio and fooling the ECM. Hi-flow exhaust is always a good idea-as well as the intake-but make sure the IAT sensor goes back in the right place-otherwise it runs crap. Hi-flow exhaust and CAI aren't worth much unless you've ported and polished the head (what good is a big hole at the beginning and a big hole at the end if there's little holes in the middle?) There really are no cheap performance mods. Contrary to popular belief-you get what you paid for. The 2.0 is designed to produce some impressive power for an engine it's size in a car that heavy. It does the job pretty well, but it ain't a race car. You can make it one-but it'll really cost ya time, hard work, and lotsa money. |
