Dude...you have a Cavalier. Think about this for a minute. It is an economy car....a 4 cylinder. It's not made to be driven at speeds of 105MPH + or more. That's just f'ing crazy.

Re: why can't i go more than 105/107 mph???
theres a speed governor that stops the car from going over 104 mph. well, mine kicks in at 104....
You can adjust of it with a computer module, like one from hypertech.... But I highly recommend that you dont

Yes, there is a speed limiter. You can disable it, but your odometer will stop working (illegal) and ya gonna kill yaself (or some other poor, unfortunate soul) because cavys aren't built for that kinda drivin'.

Need To Go Fast
Why you guys telling him that he doesn't need to go faster that 106?
If he has mods done then obviously he wants to go fast. Hey man you can but a performance chip for around $200-$300 and you can program rev limiter and air the fuel mixture and all sorts of things. I have a stock 2001 Z24 and i have my friend thaty works at the local Chevy dealer to take mine off and now it tops out at around 135 just cause i need performance parts to get MORE POWER.

Re: why can't i go more than 105/107 mph???
i might think about getting my removed, it is kinda disapointing that i could get my old 95 2.2L CAV to 115MPH but i can only get my 2001 Z24 to 108MPH.

Re: why can't i go more than 105/107 mph???
for the 1000th time u cant chip a OBD II cavalier...let alone buy a chip that will remove the speed limiter...the ecu will have to be reprogrammed.

why is it that every time someone mentions Cavalier and fast in the same post, you pack of wolves sweep in like the Grim Reaper?
Just because you may be to puny to get out of the slow lane doesn't mean that a Cavalier isn't capable of handling VERY well as speeds over 100mph. I have only minorly modded the suspension on my '89, and it handles 108 like it was only 78!! Perhaps you need to get some decent tires and breaks, and you too would see that the Cav 2 door is indeed a sporty little car! NOW.... if you can't positively contribute to the forum, SHUT UP!!!!

Re: why can't i go more than 105/107 mph???
Heya, Grayman...I got a pro/street Yugo that handles better than a cavalier at high speeds.
'Course it's all made of tubes and it has a real engine in it now and the only thing on it that even remotely resembles a Yugo is the exterior panels, which are all welded together and hinged at the rear. The car was made to carry old ladies comfortably in the front seats (but not the back-go figure?)... Not for racing. Sure-ya can disable the limiter-it's fairly easy. Usually tho, it goes like this: Johnny asks forum how to disable the safety feature on his car so it'll go faster-I tell him-Johnny goes and cuts all the wires and gets mad at me 'cause now his tranny won't shift right-OR-Johnny successfully disables the safety feature and instead of racing it on a track or an unused runway, like he's damned supposed to-Johnny races it on the two-lane blacktop in his neighborhood-Johnny is so thrilled with the fact that he can exceed 108 MPH (nevermind he's on a road designed for mebbe 40MPH), that he tries to negotiate a curve at well over a hundred MPH and Leaves the pavement and crashes thru somebody's house or hits an oak tree and becomes a pink cloud on the windshield because while he has learned how to make the car go faster-he still most likely lacks the training or experience to be able to THINK as fast as he's driving... I dunno if I'd wanna live with that weight. -Not if I was the one told him... The stock Cavy is a butt-slow car that is proportioned all wrong for racing-Ya'd hafta spend a boatload of cash to make it race-worthy. Why do all that when for the same amount of bread-ya can get a stock import that goes faster and handles tighter than the ol' swayin' boozer Cavy? Does Johnny ever consider that his brakes aren't even designed to stop a car going 108 MPH as they are, much less one going even faster than that? (Nevermind even 78 if they've been in service since whenever and prolly could stand replacing)... Prolly not. -Car that doesn't go is one thing...Car that doesn't stop is somethin' else... General rule=If your mom used to drive you to school in what is now your 'race car', you should seriously consider what you're about to do to it. Especially if the last time it was properly maintained was when you got that ride to school. |

NICE There was a post very similar to this on jbody.org about some other idiot trying to disable it, I looked for it to post here but couldn't find it. Good job!

Re: why can't i go more than 105/107 mph???
Well, right or wrong-I calls 'em like I sees 'em.
I drive for a living and I've built a couple fast cars in ma time and I've screwed up plenty o' times over the years...Luckily I survived, but some others may not be so lucky. I'll not contribute to the next obituary column. I've had a few Cavys over some time-an '83 F1 fastback (2.0L turbo), an '84 4-door (n/a 2.0), a 91 (n/a 2.2) and currently driving a '93 Pontiac Sunbird (identical to the Cavy). The cavy is just not built for racing. OK, OK, if ya were to radically mod it and reinforce the unibody (The aerodynamics of the car's configuration just isn't conducive to high speeds and the weight is all in the wrong place for the correct transfer with FWD. I mean...where does all the weight go when ya open it up? BACK! That's right! Right off the driven wheels onto the rears. Pure physics. Ya wanna race an FWD car-it pays to have a short wheelbase platform with very rigid suspension (and in the case of the cavy-elaborate rear suspension that trys to transfer some of that rearward squat back to the front. (not entirely possible-but there are ways to alleviate some of it.). Anyways-unless somebody comes in here talking about radical frame mods and tubs and traction bars-I have to assume that Johnny saw FnF too many times and wants to turn mom's old cavy into a rice rocket. Now I got nothin' against rice-lots of those guys put large amounts of money and work into their cars and I salute them for their 400HP Hondas. But fer damn sure they didn't just chop a couple wires and jump in and stomp on it. These guys take safety more seriously than the average customizer/backyard mechanic. They know they can get seriously dead from taking shortcuts and disabling safety equipment. There's a reason, no? That the guys that designed cavys put that limiter there. Because they know that that's the absolute fastest that car should go just before it exceeds it's physical design limitations. If you RE-design it so it'll go faster and maintain the safety factor-so much the better. Cutting the limiter is like purposely standing behind an old rear-dump push mower with the bag removed 'cause it's too heavy with it.. Ya just KNOW it's gonna clobber ya-it's just a question of WHEN. (Erod-this rant isn't for you-this is for the FnF-wannabes that think they're gonna start a racing career in mom's old grocery-getter). edunovoa24-chances are that yer still alive and well because you haven't been able to go over 105/107 mph. And ya can consider yerself lucky at that speed. Bad stuff happens lots faster at high speeds... Where, pray tell were you attaining that speed, may I ask? |
