failed emmisions horribly!!

I have a friend with a 91 Z28. Had emisiions today and failed very bad.
His hydrocarbons reading was 4.04!! And the standard is .80. I told him i thought it was probably his cat. But i'm not sure. Thanks, Phil

Re: failed emmisions horribly!!

california, if you look at your engine and think about modifying the exhaust you fail.

as the for the question at hand, i would think it was something like the cat, i doubt that the hydrocarbons could get that bad off of a bad mixture alone...

Re: failed emmisions horribly!!

id say its the cat, but could also be the air pump, if the air pump fails, it can cause an over rich mixture on the exhaust, that burns up the cat, then it goes, so you got both of your emissions parts that clean up hydrocarbons are fried.

Re: failed emmisions horribly!!

well this is my first post but i do know a little about the cali smog crap. i personaly have a '68 chevelle so i dont have to worry. with your engine swap your kinda stuck. you would be alot better off doing a rebuild. i have built a couple trucks actualy that have had to be smoged. one of them was and 80's chevys that was stock with a 350 but we stroked it to a 383 and after talking to the reps at comp cams a few time we decide on a cam that both us and them thought would pass smog, keep in mind that was alog with all the other parts that wernt over the top. as for your header question, all the stuff we build except for a couple cars that were just rebuilds cuz of blow engines in economy cars, we use headers, and we havnt had a problem with any of the stuff we have done not passing cali smog. the only thing you have to do is make sure with your headers would be that they have a C.A.R.B. number. that is the number that the guy doing the smog check will look for on the headers and other stuff that is aftermarket and would effect emissions. anything that is C.A.R.B certified is legal for use in california.

Re: failed emmisions horribly!!

yeah, aint emissions fun???? i get to throw the IROC on the rack for the first time sense she rolled off the assembly line 14 years ago. shes an arkansas car, just put a full exhaust, edelbrock headers, and flomaster american thunder exhaust on it, with a full tune up, and oil change, and clean filters everywhere. and a BG induction service. taking bets on wheather or not shell pass
