96 Riv Security

I am tired of waiting for the thing to go off before I start my car. How can I disable the system, permanently.

Re: Re: 96 Riv Security

I will check that. there does not seem to be any cause = effect to why it arms. Might be the wire. I have no alarm problem, yet. Just a 3 or 4 min wait for the ignition to work. It will give me no problems for a wile. Then I will have to wait at start up a few times. Sound seems to arm it. Does anyone know what turns on the security light.

Not sure what system you are talking about??? I am guessing the VATS system???? That is a passive system that is always on. To know if you have it, you should have a black "chip" in your key. That chip is just a resistor. It contacts 2 contacts in the ignition cyl.. Then, that goes to 2 little 24gauge wires. This is where the weak link is. See, each and everytime you start your car, these wires move back and forth inside the cyl.. These eventually break or ground out.

The way to check it is when you are having your problem you need to tear some things open. Look behind your knee knocker plate and you'll see a wire that is usually either yellow or black. It is actually those 2 wires inside a sheath. If you follow those you'll see that they go to a simple plug. Unplug it and measure the resistance on the wires going to the steering column with a meter. That value should match to what the keys are.

To permiently disable this, just put a resistor inline to the VATS wires that go to the ecm. You just cut the VATS wires and the put the resistor between the wires going up under the dash. Try to match the keys as close as you can. IF you can't be right on, try to be a little higher.

Cool. Thanks. I do have the key chip. So this should work.

Re: 96 Riv Security

I built up the key contacts with a little solder. This worked for some time. But I seem to be back to square one. Time to try the resistor. where the two fine wires plug in, there is a large plug. Can I just unplug this? Need to unhook battery first?

Re: 96 Riv Security

OK. I did it and it worked. Took a couple of resistors soldered to gather to get the math right, on the Ohm's. I just "plugged the ends of the resistors into where the 24 gage plugs went in. A little silicone glue to hold it in place. It was so tight under there that I did not want to be waving a hot soldering iron around. Probably would have done more damage, then I fixed.

BTW, the dealer wanted 400 bucks to put in another lock cylinder, and the stupid wires would probably just broken again. The resistors cost me 99 cents.
