Continuing a conversation from the "Prom help" thread:
We're trying to decide on a good looking replacement air cleaner for the 91-93 caprices. Suggestions include the Edelbrock 1203. We're trying to think of something that will be big and chrome and sit on top of the engine. Wouldn't that look cool? Some considerations: Will any of these generic round air cleaners work? (http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...40&prmenbr=361) (a chevy branded air cleaner, pn 778-141-302) Will having the engine take in air at this point reduce power since it's warmer that the stock location or will the increased air flow overcome that? Anybody have something like this? Or know a specific part? Will it fit under the hood? How would that look with some nice chrome valve covers! -Ben |

air cleaners
i just got the triangle air filter in today and installed it looks and works great. my caprice is an 89 350 5.7 and pn 1203 works on mine and the hood closes. as for chrome valve covers i already have those they look nice if you take the time to keep them clean but the get dirty easy. 2 days ago i blew a rear main in my car its leakin like a bitch. i got the seal but i am waiting for this weekend to fix it. this is the first time i have pulled the transmission on this car it should be fun. i cant wait to get my car running like a champ again. an oil leak will make any car look like a POS.

Re: New Air Cleaners
yeah I hear you. i've got an oil leak somewhere too. i bet it's that same damn seal. the car's probably had four of them. i guess its a weak point. You can even kinda smell it some times, but it may be a small exhaust leak at that same place we mentioned in the other post but I can't get under it to check. That's a lot of trouble to replace the rear main seal isn't it?
Your 350 is tbi right? so the same filter housing you put on it should work just fine on my 305. How hard was it to install? |

Re: New Air Cleaners
it was easy all you have is 3 metal pieces that fit on your screw then the filter just fits right in place

Re: New Air Cleaners
i smell my leak what you smell is the oil leaking onto the exhaust and burning my seal is gettin worse my oil light on today and when i checked it was bone dry so if its the same leak go ahead and change it before it gets worse. the seal is only about 20.00 at auto zone. it takes about 3 hours to change because you have to drop the whole tranny at least thats what i have been told

Re: New Air Cleaners
good lord. transmission removal my be a little beyond me at this point since i don't have any way to jack up the car yet, but i'm working on that. those things are crazy expensive to have mechanics replace, like $300 because of all the labor. mine doesn't leak that bad, but it's pretty bad.really pisses me off too. i'd really like to rebuild the entire engine and replace all the seals and rings, put a new intake manifold on etc but that's a lot of work that i've never done before. if i was going to do it, i'd hold the car up in the garage for a month and double check everything with the manual. i have to say the car is stupid easy to work on for the most part. its amazing how much difference a whole for the engine and having it mounted for real wheel drive can make. i've been working on a 1987 buick century with fwd. it's freaking insane! i had to take the fan off just to change the stupid spark plugs! you can't get a tool in anywhere on that engine. (for anyone interested in that tale of woe head over to the buick century section and look for a post 1987 Century with issues.)
I've replaced the computer and proms in my caprice before and i'm realitively sure that need to use the computer that went with whatever tbi unit your using. Although i suppose some cars have the same unit so maybe some s-10s came with that tbi? Also possible is that you could have a custon chip made which would have tbi for this unit and anything else for the truck, it might require tweeking to to change torque or something so it shifts ok. I don't know if you would have to fool with the distributor or ignition coil in the truck, i think the computer controls advance on the caprice so it might try to do it there too. I'd ask for a second opinion but that should be enough to get you thinking in the right direction. I bet you have to use it and you'll need/should get a custom chip though. There are some nice tbi related resources on the net too that provide a good backgroud on the system. Try: http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/modthel03.html and http://chevythunder.com/gm_throttle_...ction_pg_1.htm you might have to cut and paste that last one together. So puttin the s 10 engine in the caprice right? hmmm.. how is it powered now? Is it carb or tpi/mpi? Maybe you could just keep that inejection. That would be kind of cool. |

Re: New Air Cleaners
btripp: are you sure that the crank seal is the culprit?
Try checking your valve cover bolts first, along with the bolts on your oil pan. Chevy small blocks are known for leaking at the valve covers. I check every single nut and bolt I can find on the engine and tranny whenever I change my oil or anytime I'm under the car. Every now and then, I will find a fastener that has come loose on say, the throttle body, valve covers, tranny pan. It's cheap insurance to take a few minutes to do... Trannys aren't that hard to take out. The only real pain about it is getting some of the fasteners off the first time(they've probably been there since the car was new) Stick the car up on some jack stands and get your hands dirty. Not to mention getting rust in your eyes, slicing open a knuckle or two, and swearing when that last nut just won't come off!! ![]() Oh, what's that about an S-10 engine in a Caprice? -Bry
