85 Cav Conv. stalling when I stop

Please help! I just bought a 85 Cav, it's in sweet condition except....
if I run the car at highway speeds for awhile or it gets warmed up, when I am coasting to a stop, the car acts like it's in 5th gear and I'm putting the brakes on, without pushing the clutch - it sputters and jerks. (It's automatic). Then it finally dies. It starts back up again but then when I put it in drive it jumps off too fast then stalls again! I have taken it back to the dealer and they had it for a couple weeks and couldn't find anything wrong - any suggestions?

Hi, In your transmission, there is an electric solnoid that locks the tranny in 5th gear when driving at higher speeds. The problem here is that this solnoid isn't releasing so your tranny is still engaged when you are coming to a stop, therefore stalling your car. This solnoid is mainly for fuel economy and your car will function fine without it. You can dis-engage it by disconnecting the electrical connection. Since I don't have a Cavalier, I'm not sure of the exact location. I'm told that you should see an electrical connection on the side of your tranny near the torque converter. Dis-connect this connection and see if this solves your problem.

Whoa. Hold on there a minute.
Some of that connection also controls the clutches for the lower gears on some models.
Better to just pull the TCC fuse out of the fuse block and see if the problem goes away.
It'll rev higher at cruising speeds and your gas mileage may drop some, but if that makes the car stop stalling-the TCC solenoid relay is prolly sticking and should be replaced-cheap and easy.

I'm going to have to go with MoeD. Than transmission cylinode is bad get it replaced it's about 200 for parts and labor

i used to have a 91 cavalier. i explained my problem to everyone who would listen exactly the way you explained your prob. finally someone suggested to unplug the torque converter. it's a plug on your transmission un plug it and your good to go. I put over 15,000 miles on mine then sold it to my sister and she is steal driving it. the only problem is a little less gas milage. no big deal really

Well You Can't Exactly "Un-plug" The Torque Converter. You would unplug the Soliniod that opperates the TCC. You Should probably take it to the tranny shop and have them fix the TCC Solinoid. Also Check around for tranny shops, to see if you are getting a good deal. One more thing, just because they are cheap doesn't mean they will do it right. Make sure they have a good reputation.
