2000 Explorer Transmission

2000 Explorer with transimission trouble. The trans is ok in reverse, then when shifting to overdrive it is ok in lowest gear. As the transmission starts to turn faster and vehicle is approaching 20 MPH the transmission almost pauses (could this be slipping - it feels like it), this allows the engine to rev higher. The transmission then goes into 2nd gear. With a somewhat of a clunk. The clunk is not bad but it is definitely noticable. From there on the transmission is fine and no apparent problems.

The news is that we have taken the vehicle to a transmission shop, they fixed what we thought was the problem. Spent $900.00 which replaced planetary and clutches. Transmission guy says that the other problem is likely a "slow computer", which will cost $ 2,000.00 for the parts plus labor.

Has anyone had this problem?

Please help.

Re: 2000 Explorer Transmission

Think you have a slow transmission guy.

If this is a V6, second is made up from first and the overdrive band. So, a snapped OD band or planetary weld break is reasonable. You don't have to be very smart to be a parts changer. I'd find someone else before you wast any more money.

Thanks Opera House

I appreciate you taking the time to reply. The transmission is stilll under warranty for when he fixed it before. I suppose I will take it back but not pay for a new computer.

Thanks again.

I had trouble with a flare between 2nd and 3rd gears and my OD light would flash. I found a mechanic who knew what was wrong with it. Mine had a bad valve body (along with a ton of other 5 speed Ford transmissions). There is really no way to test this, just to find a mechanic who might know about it. Even a lot of Ford dealerships don't know about this. I had it fixed with a new valve body for $750.00 and now it works great.
