broken rear spring

I have a '93 Escort LX that had both rear springs broken near the bottom at around 130k miles. I bought it with 119k miles on it so don't know the earlier history. I was told by the mechanic at the repair shop (Goodyear) that this is a common problem with Escorts. I had to have the springs replaced again at 170k miles when the upper strut support on the left side rotted out causing the spring to shear. It rubbed against the tire but did not puncture it.
A coworker just bought a '97 Mercury Mystique from an elderly woman. The car has only 17k miles on it and it too has a boken spring!!! Sounds like FOMOCO has a problem with rear coil springs. Anyone aware of TSB's or recalls on defective springs?? I know of a recall to install a shield to prevent tire puncture if the sprigs break.

I personally have never had to replace the springs on any of my Escorts yet.

Re: broken rear spring

My `92 had both rear sprins broken at the top when I bought it. I just also replaced 2 broken front springs on my `94 Tempo ... it makes me curious about defective Ford springs too.

Just had to get the rear springs replaced on my mother In-Laws 99 SE. The car only has 30k miles. I have never had to replace springs because of rot before. I've replaced shocks and struts for normal wear, but never for spring rot. Sad quality.

Re: broken rear spring

97 has never had a broken spring. The struts replaced yes. But, no broken springs. 140,000 miles on it

Just replaced both of my rear springs on my 94 EGT due to them being broken. I was checking out the springs after I took them out and they're tapered towards the bottom where they just so happened to be broken.

Re: broken rear spring

I also have a 93 escort lx. I got the car at about 130k and I had the springs break at about 155k. At first I blamed myself (I caught air off a railroad track incline) But in my reading I've learned that it is pretty common, so now I just blame age. My neon took the same jump and no harm was done.

Re: broken rear spring

I broke a rear spring some time ago, and then a front spring this year. These care are notorious for it.

Re: broken rear spring

I had to replace the rears to pass inspection. I probably had somewhere around 130 or 140k miles. They were broken at the bottom. I replaced struts at the same time; I needed new ones anyway. If the springs break again, I might just try cutting the broken sections off and drive with a slightly lowered back end.

Re: broken rear spring

97 lx wagon needed new springs. Maybe we overloaded it once by having four people in it and a hundred pounds in cargo. We never really noticed it that much but once new springs and shocks were in the back it was great.

Re: broken rear spring

Slightly off subject ....

But does anyone know a source of slightly longer, or stiffer, springs so I can boost the rear of my '82 wagon a bit?
