Unhappy 2003 325xit stalling, shaking?

Hello!
Ok, first let me say I love this car *when* it's performing.
Anyone know what this might be -- I checked out the "transmission problem" post and I'm not sure my car's issue is the same.
Check Engine light came on two days ago, intended to take to dealer next week. In the meantime, the car has been shaking quite a bit when idleing or in first. This morning, it stalled several times when I tried to start it, eventually holding at barely okay after I "gave it some gas" (eek).
The oil dipstick indicated that it was quite low on oil, so I gave it a quart of synthetic 5w-30...which seemed to at least allow the car to start without stalling.
Still, it feels way precarious.
Btw, I live in the Midwest and have replaced 3/4 tires in two months due to the car's ill-handling of potholes!
I have 7000 miles on the car and purchased it last June.
Ideas appreciated!
Tracey

Tracey,

If you can, I would get the car checked out as soon as possible by a qualified (maybe not dealer unless you have a warranty option there) mechanic and fixed up. If you can't arrange that right now, I would at least find alternate means of transport in the meantime. You might endanger yourself or wreck your wheels if you keep getting those kinda problems. Good luck.
