Want 2003 Silverado stereo replacement
2003 Silverado 5.3 EXT SB
I have the standard GM CD/Cas stereo and it blows. I want to replace the head unit with something with some gonads, and these crappy speakers gotta go too. I want something that still fits well in the dash, or a filler that fills the gap left with a CD pocket or something. I'm using the underseat storage so subs are not possible. My wifes Grand Am has great sound including very low low's, I don't see why mine can't sound as good. Right now it's good for sports talk shows on AM, and some cranked Tool is out of the question. How about some help here??? Thanks! |

I have an Alpine 9835 for the head unit, Infinity Kappa 6 1/2 in the front and Infinity 4x6 in the back. The speakers are awsome and can handle a lot of power, and never distort. For the head unit to fit you will need a dash kit to fill in the empty space, but it looks good. The head unit has some huge gonads with 26 watts RMS per channel.

Re: Want 2003 Silverado stereo replacement
That looks good so far. Is there any way you could post a photo of how it looks in the dash? Where did you get the filler? Is it a pocket? I always liked Alpine. I had one years ago, and it was great. Thanks for the speaker size. I hate to take apart the pannels just to get the size.
Will this system hit the very low, lows? A CD in my wifes car I can hear the lows, but nothing in the Silverado. Thank you in advance for any further help on this! |

Re: Want 2003 Silverado stereo replacement
I know the sound your talking about in the Grand Am. I think this is because they use a free-air type speaker in the trunk, and the trunk acts as its speaker box sorta letting the speaker become a small sub. If you'll notice, put a CD in with the lows, sit in the car, then let someone open the trunk while it's playing..it sounds crappy.

The lows are pretty good for speakers. The dash kit is a filler. I will try to post a pic soon.

Re: Want 2003 Silverado stereo replacement
I have a 2001 GMC sierra....The vehicles are pretty much the same for the radios. I am putting in a DIN Panasonic AM-FM St./CD player. Went to Pep Boys and purchased a dash kit, antenna adaptor, and wiring harness plug. It will work and fill the hole up if you do it right. Make sure you get the right size speakers for the doors. The radio I have in my truck sucks too. Good luck.
