Re: 2004 piston slap

I heard from someone (not a salesman) that GM had fixed that problem for 2004. I've got a 2004 2500HD w/6.0 liter with no slap.

Re: 2004 piston slap

My Grand Dad has an 04 with the 5.3, just had its first oil change and no slap. He also had a 2000, traded it to the 04, it had 36,000 miles and the 5.3 and no slap either, lol.

Re: 2004 piston slap

I had heard that the problem was particularly bad in two years, but could remember whether it was '01/'02 or '02/'03. Either way, the problem is supposed to be fixed now. It may have been fixed for '03.

Re: 2004 piston slap

I think the term "piston slap" has been greatly abused!

If you Rap an engine with slap, you get a quick multible tick during decel, most people experience a tick during idle.
My 1998 3.1 Malibu piston slap problem turned out to be a lazy harmless lifter.

Just something to think about!

Re: 2004 piston slap

I have a 2000 2500 with 6.0ltr and I have piston slap. The truck has 120,000 kms. It seems to have gottin worse since changing over to synthetic oil. I bought the truck used with an extended warranty so I will be getting a compression check before the warranty runs out. I will start the motor for about a minute before driving as I don't like excelerating when the motor is knocking. It seems if you give it a chance to warm up there is less knocking. Other than that the engine runs good. Doesn't burn oil and power is good. gets about 18mpg and 11mpg pulling the rv.

DPatrick... your problem is typical GM piston slap. the piston is loose in the bore (to simplify) and makes noise when cold. when the piston and cylinder heat up, they expand, making it a tighter fit, and quieter.

changing to synthetic oil will make it worse, since although synthetic protects better, it's thinner by nature. oil packed under your rings helps quiet the piston in the cylinder. make the oil thinner, and you allow the piston to "pivot" more in the cylinder, making the noise worse.....

reports are conflicting as to whether or not the problem will cause long term damage or not....... i had a chrysler that i drove (318 cid) for 173, 000 miles with piston slap, and it never became anything more than annoying.....

if new, check production date on engine.

if reman, they're rebuilt by independant shops, contracted by GM.............not by the factory........
