It is bit early for yours to start doing this, but it is a common problem that is quite insignificant really. Axle wrap causes the rear drive shaft to bind slightly, this is caused by soft rear leaf springs that provide a good ride but allow some axle wrap. When you come to a stop, the rear drive shaft binds, then when you begin again, apply torque, the drive shaft makes a dull popping sound as the binding is released.
The dealer can fix this by disassembling the shaft and applying grease. It will come back in time but it doesn't hurt anything. |

yea they did the grease thing already and it didnt help. was looking at the transmission mount there is a bolt with a big washer in the middle, but it only looks like it there just to be there not really holding anything.
you can move the tail of the transmission easily. can also notice that the shifter moves alot during acceleration and braking, when it bumps the shifter will jerk. just really annoying, and there seems to be a slight vibration when you accelerate a litter quicker than normal, but in first gear only. |

Re: 2001 tacoma transmission bumping.
I have a similar thing going on w/ my 03 tacoma. The dealer replaced my drive shaft and I still feel a slight shutter. I took is back and took them out for a test drive, 2 different technicians. Both of them said that its nothing to worry about. Since its very suttle, I plan to let it go for now and see if it gets worse. I would be interested in a cure as well.

Re: 2001 tacoma transmission bumping.
I've got a '98 tacoma 4x4 that does the same thing. I bought it used about 2 months ago and did not know the maintenance history (although I assumed it was okay since I bought it from Carmax), and was worried that maybe the previous owner hadn't taken good care of it. Is this a common problem to 4 wheel drive vehicles? Also if it's the driveshaft that's the problem, I assume changing tranny fluid won't have any effect? This problem doesn't seem to be bad, but it's really irritating...

Re: 2001 tacoma transmission bumping.
Might be a problem with a dry spline in the rear propeller shaft. It may not be the problem with all your trucks, but is is a problem with some 4WDs. If it is the problem, greasing all the propellor shaft fittings and particularly the spline fitting with moly grease will solve the problem (the splines take alot of grease). It takes a while to finally go away completely. The dryer and more damaged the splines are, the longer it will take to get quiet.
YMMV |

2001 tacoma transmission bumping. |
Hi, I had the same problem with my 2004 Tacoma. The dealer gave up on it and that I had to learn to live with it. I have read several issues on the internat and found that by greasing the spline would fix the problem. I took it back to the dealer and told them the same, they did greas the spline as I wanted (so they said). The problem seemed to go away for a while and came back. This time, I took care the problem myself. I bought the most expensive grease I could find and removed the spline. It was almost no grease in side. The grease nibble was too far back from where the grease can do its job, and there was a pocket right inside where the nibble is to to receive the grease. If the technician is to pump the grease through the nibble with the grease gun, all that will just sit in the pocket and not to work its way around the spline as it should. I cleaned out the residue of the old grease and applied as much grease it can take, I used my fingers, worked the grease in each groves and gave it a good exercise by pulling it in/out 15 times.
It has been two weeks now and I am so thill with the fix, that I think everyone should try if they ahave the same problem. Good luck. |
