|
I need advice
i recently found out that my gas tank needs to be replaced on my 86 z28 and i was wondering if u guys think i would be able to do it my self or if i should go ahead and have a shop do it. if u think i can handle it your tips would be much appreciated.

ummm, it's a bitch. you could do it, but it takes a little patience. you'll have to drop the torsion bars, and the bolts will most likely twist off. the hardest part is fighting the filler neck. you will want to get some jack stands and get the rear end up in the air.

Well I guess it depends on if you are somewhat mechanically inclined or not.. Do you often make your own repairs to the car? How well do you know the car? The best way to learn is to Dive right in! thats how I started Its not a big job.. Nothin you should havta Pay anyone for!
tip you say? empty it first! lol Thats all you need are some tools a friend and a case of beer!

its a big job, but i dont think it would be too hard. i dont know what your skill level is, it would definitely be atleast half-way up on the difficulty meter, challenging but not impossible...

i wouldnt call myself a professional mechanic but i do all of the matinace work on the car and recently replaced the entire exhaust system including headers

I did that job this past summer, it was a project alright, I have a 91 and there were a couple ornary bolts that had to be torched off, the Haynes manual for it has step by step instructions on how to do it, I wouldn't have been able to do it without it, so if you don't have one, get one. You'll need to put the car up on jack-stands at the frame and once you get everything apart you'll need a jack to lower the rear-end down, but not too far, you don't wanna bust the brake lines. and yes, the filler neck is a filthy whore, you gotta turn and angle it just right to get it out and back in. as for my advice, get a new fuel pump and filter and change it now while you have the tank out, whether it works or not.

you could do the lazy man's fuel pump install. take out the carpet in the hatch, cut out a square of metal and do it that way. put a hinge on the metal you cut out and you got instant fuel pump access for the rest of the time you own the car...
