Zc Sohc Help !!
I drive an 88 hatch and i recently got my ZC SOHC done. Now, i don't really have any aftermarket parts to put it in yet except an AEM Cold Air Intake, but I wanted to add extra "kick" for my car so what else is worth getting?...cam gears??...pulleys??...headers??
And for those who do have this engine in their car or had, as far as each gear (1st,2nd.3rd,4th,5th) what are it's limits on the rpm...sorry for the stupid question but rather find out this way than the hard way and blow my engine..hahahaha. Thanks |

Re: Zc Sohc Help !!
I have the same engine. If you don't have an Si tranny I recommend that first. You could spend $1000 on header, exhaust, pulley, gears & barely feel a thing. http://www.importreview.com/performance.html
Head work is a great place to start http://www.mmrusa.com/gudehead.htm It's all about money I'm not sure what stock redline is, I take mine up 7,000-That MSD ignition w/ rev limiter work VERY well. My bottom engine is stock - upper end tweaked just a bit. |

Re: Zc Sohc Help !!
I got a sohc ZC w/ Si tranny and the Si tranny is what helps acceleration the most. The AEM CAI and 2.5" custom catback exhaust helped it breathe better and the upper part of my rpm's pull harder than before. I agree, most performance would probably get some head work.

Re: Zc Sohc Help !!
I got pulleys, i/h/e, cam gear, etc. and I think it does make a difference IMHO... also, I have Jacobs ignition... redlines were at 7 (7+ when had h.c. pistons) in lower gears (si tranny) but clutch is going bad so I don't take it passed 6 anymore... still get to 60mph in under 8 sec. with a slipping clutch... how is that possible? I guess driving/abusing/rallying a rex for over 2 years lets you know your car better... oh yeah, pulleys, cam gear, ignition came with car when I bought it (dirt cheap on ebay)... but if I had to do it again, I would go MSD...

Re: Zc Sohc Help !!
the FIRST thing i would buy is the si tranny if u don't already have on. Then get I/H/E. These will only add about 5-7 WHP, but they're are more important than HP, because they help ur engine breathe better, especially at high rpms. Then, I would get headwork done, some low comp pistons, and a junkyard turbo setup. You can prolly get all this done for about 1500 and have urself a quick car.

If you are looking to mod past like $1500, then I'd honesty say go with Forced induction. You can pick up a used Greddy or custom turbo kit for around $1200-1500. That alone would put you into the high-mid 14s. If you were to try to break into the 14s with a naturally aspirated combo, you would definately surpass $1500.
If you are not looking to do something drastic, then... get rid of the spare, rear carpet and sound deadening material, custom Cold air intake, hx rims, gutt the cat. and go on a diet
