Audible oil warning signal, and oil light
A few months ago purchased a '94 Jetta III GL that seemed to be in very good mechanical condition. Had the oil changed for the 2nd time since I got the vehicle, and on the same day, started hearing this beeping sound accompanied by flashing oil indicator that pulsated with each beep.. Immediately pulled over to check the stick, and there was no indication that it was low on oil. This behavior continues, mostly with a lot of stop-and-go driving. Not wanting to experience the "boy who cried wolf" syndrome, every time that happens, I pull off as quickly as possible to check the oil level, and it has yet to indicate any lower than it did on the day it was changed. I have read that these things are known for using as much as 1 quart per 1K, and I can live with that. I'm just curious as to what might be causing these warnings to fire, and where I might start looking to try to eliminate, or at the very least reduce what I can only term as false signals. Could it be a bad sending unit?
Thank you very much for any insight you could provide. |

Re: Audible oil warning signal, and oil light
Since it happened on the same day as an oil change I'd suspect what weight of oil they used & if the filter has a problem. There is a high & low pressure switch, one on the side of the cylinder head & another above the oil filter. First check their connections. The one on the head goes ground when no oil pressure, the one at the filter goes ground when there is oil pressure (and reverse). It's fairly simple to check w/a test light.

Thank you very much for the information. I'll get a meter and check those this weekend. Regards, Ward
