safe idling

For the last few months it has issues on idling smoothly. When I turn on headlights, defogger, heat, fan and wipers the rpm tach goes all the way down to just a hair above 500 rpm. The car vibrates like some small muscle car and sort of chugs just a little. So today I idled it at 1k with nothing on and it runs a lot smoother. Is it safe to have it idling at 1k rpm? And what does your cars idle at?

So, when you dont have headlights or the heater on or anything, you car idles fine? If thats the case, id get your alternator checked. If its going bad, you dont wanna end up stranded on some highway. But your car should idle around like 800rpm.

Yeah, before i adjusted it, the car would idle just a hair rough with nothing on. But when I turned all the accessories on, the car would become very rough because it dropped maybe 400 rpms.

Re: safe idling

mine idles at 1200rpm but i have jacobs ignition, pulleys and other stuff... sometimes I can't bump too much cuz it lowers battery and tach falls below to like 700rpm at idle which my car doesn't like... idles perfectly smooth at 1000-1200rpm... except, cold starts are at almost 2000rpm... is that bad? it's been doing it for 2 years now... car always starts right up
