Hows it going everybody? I just bought my 2000 eclipse gs and i am proud to say that i love it. Just one problem though. When I am sitting at an idle there is a weird vibrating noise comin from under the hood. Sounds like something is rattling. It only does this during idle though. It will do this between 600 and 900 RPM. After 900 the rattling goes away and the car idles at 600. Any comments or suggestions would be great. Thanks everyone.

Re: rough idle
Is it a standard?

Re: rough idle
If it is a manual transmission it is the Throw Out Bearing on the clutch. Have no fear though, it is harmless.
The way to test it is this, when you are at idle and it is making the noise, push the clutch in. If it stops rattling, its the TOB. If it continues, then it's something else. |

Re: rough idle
yeah its probably the TOB. it does it in my car too. from what ive heard from other owners, it is pretty standard on the 5spd

Re: rough idle
It usually idles between 650-720. Have you tried to adjust the idle yet?

Re: rough idle
then its at the right idle. no not yet, wanted to see if it was idleing at the right rpm first. should i raise the idle up, is that ok for the car?? it doesnt vibrate when the rpms are at about 900-1000.

Re: rough idle
You probably dont want it to idle very high. Where it is at now is a good idle... if the vibration goes away after you start going, it really isnt that big of a deal. If you raise the idle up it may gradually hurt the engine. I had a jeep that idled around 1000-1200 and it could run itself without me even pushing on the accelerator... it was convenient, but not a real good idea! Just keep it where it is at if it doesnt bother you too much
