could you be more specific

do you have XP and 98 in a dual boot, or do you want to resintall 98? I'm really not sure what you mean in your post.

My computer has started having the reboot problem too. I am running windows xp, and I have norton antivirus 2004. It will reboot without warning about twice a month. Norton will find spybot and delete it. Should I reinstall xp?

If you are dual-booting, then no. Everything is still in it's respective directory and all you have to do is copy and move the files over from their location on the hard drive. If you mean removing Windows XP entirely and installing Windows 98, then yes you'll lose them. There is no way to install Windows 98 over XP without removing XP first (formatting) due to the incompatibilities between the file systems of the two operating systems (Windows 98 can't read NTFS) plus you can't install an older O/S over a new one.

In my experience, when XP just reboots spontaneously like that it's due to a driver or program incompatibility with Windows XP. The Compaq's and HP's I used to repair when I worked at CompUSA would do that if an incompatible driver was used. Then again, I have found Norton to have a mind of its own as well and there's no telling what it might do to your system when it encounters programs with virus-like attributes. That's one of the few reasons I don't like to use Norton. I doubt it's Windows causing your problem in this case though. Sounds to me like it's Norton, but that's just my opinion.

in this case there is a small posibility that he has XP running over a fat32 partition. I was actually helping one of my roomates to fix his computer because the "expert" that helped install his system not only installed the entite Xp over Fat32(which true is not the end of the world) but - check this out - he had it se up that C: was shared both read and write with not even a password. Now you guess how many viruses he had?

I had considered the possibility of this, but in most cases XP converts to NTFS if it is installed over a previous version of Windows using FAT32. It'll default to NTFS if it was a clean install.

As for the "expert" that installed your roommate's PC, I wouldn't let him near another computer again. I'm sure the shared drive would have been okay, but if your roommate doesn't know how to avoid viruses or if it was on a perpertual internet connection without a firewall or defensive measures, then yeah I can imagine the havoc on his PC.

Not only was it on a always on but i happened to be on a campus housing LAN which is so dirty that it forced the university to give away free full versions of norton anti-virus(i don't even want to know what all those licences cost)

and while i was trying to save his data he kept telling me how great and how many certifications that guy had, anoying the crap out of me

Re: XP Reboting Help

gotta love that. another thing that hasnt been mentioned, although this one is not too likely, is if the computer isnt hardware stable. That has been know to cause a comptuer to reboot for no real reason.

true that could happen. And one of the most overlooked component is the power supply. there are way too many crappy power supplys out there that don't deliver the wattage they are suposed to and fluctuate or even worse.

And ofcourse no matter how good your harware or drivers are, an improper power suply will make you system crash.

Hehe, that's the best. The problem with certs is that no matter how many you have, it means diddly-squat. Just because you have a piece of paper that says you know something, it doesn't mean you do.

And yeah, university networks are virus-ridden and problematic sometimes. I can't imagine the cost of the Norton licences.

As for power supplies, in my opinion this place has THE best power supplies on the market. They are a little more expensive, but in the hardware industry, you get what you pay for. My tower runs a 425watt supply and my dual slot Pentium III server runs a 510watt supply, both which are from this company. I have NO complaints and have been impressed with their workmanship, quality, and longevity. They know their stuff.

Yes that seems to be the power suply maximum PC has been raving about. I might give it a try in my next system.

Btw i undestood that you have a dual PIII but do you have dual aka redundant power suplys too?

For now i've been using Antec power suplys and they worked like a charm. In the last test i saw from tomsharware they came up as delivering the advertised power reliably.

Re: XP Reboting Help

i have an antec 400 watt. supposts my overclocked 2700 just fine, along with my 9800 pro AIW. gotta put win 2k back on mine though. AIW's seem to hate to work correctly in XP with no fix available to the public, it sux. also, i would suggest reading other places than tom's. for cpu's he is very biased and seems to be a bit biased in graphics cards as well. i dont go there after reading a couple of his intel rules and AMD is a second rate chip maker that should have goen out of buisness cause it cant make a 3 ghz chip.

weird i have two AIW running on my machines both on Xp and they run perfectly.

True they are a bit old. One is a AIW rage 128 and the other is a AIW radeon(the original without a number)...and yes i know i need to upgrade.

BTW i know about how big intel fanboys the tomsharware guys are with their 30 bazilion stage pipelines that magically never get any branch mispredictions. They are not my main source for info don't worry plus I'm still 100% amd

For now I'm waiting for the new Fx's with the future common 939 socket and no need for ECC ram and maybe 90nm, so i can build my next system.
