Gas odor in '95 GT

When my '95 GT gets hot, there is what I think is a gas odor. I changed the vapor cannister and never top off the tank when I fill it up, it still stinks when it's hot out. There does not appear to be any leaks.
I also get a detonation when it's hot. Could they be related?
I use 91 octane. Only mods are a cat back and K&N filter. Cooling system has been rebuilt so it doesn't run hot.

Any ideas out there?

i'd say you shouldn't be using 91 on stock compression. i'm assuming you dont' have a power adder. change to regular 87 and see what happens. that should solve your detonation problem. as for a fuel smell, just because there don't appear to be any leaks doesnt' mean there aren't any. if you can get the car up in the air, check all the lines while it's running to see if you get drips. also, you could have a bad o-ring on one of your injectors (there are 2 per injector) and it's most likely a top one.

There's no point to be running 91 octane on your combo, definitely switch back to 87. Higher octane than needed hurts horsepower and your engine for that matter. As for the heavy exhaust smell, check your EGR. A non-nunctioning or mal-functioning EGR will cause a rich exhaust smell.

changed the EGR over the weekend. Pinging is gone and it hasn't gotten real hot since but I haven't smelled the heavy fuel odor.
Good tip thanks
