Question SOHC vs. DOHC

I'm car shopping, and have found a beautiful 98 GT w/ only 47k on it. It's at a used car lot, and they're asking $12,900 for it. Perfect 5spd, 2 owner, clean, and seems very well maintained. Has every GT option except for sunroof. After reading a ton of these threads, speaking w/ a 10 yr. Mitsu dealer tech, and other research, I'm skeptical in buying the SOHC. Now, I've had a ton of speeding tickets in my non-turbo
Talon, so I don't need a land rocket, but can anyone give me any pros and cons on the SOHC? I really love this car, but am also hesitant because of the "average" to "below average" consumer reports and reliability reviews that I keep seeing. If I get the car I'll end up doing very few mods (so I say now) but I'm wondering if I'll be happier w/ the DOHC (I know, I know- I only wish that I could afford the TT, AWD, and AWS VR-4). Thanks for any advice.
P.S. I obviously know that HP is about 50 more w/ the DOHC)

Re: SOHC vs. DOHC

$12 900 is quite a bit of money. If I'm not mistaken, I'm sure you could find a VR4 for that much or even less if you look around. You probably would be happier with the DOHC. The extra 60 horse doesn't hurt and it probably has more possibilities if you ever did want to mod it out. I don't think that the reliability of the SOHC would be that much worse than the DOHC, and if you don't want the speed then you could always go that route. But I still think it's too much money....

Re: SOHC vs. DOHC

I think SOHC is base model 3kgt. The number cams doesn't reflect reliability; it's just a good amount of people neglect maintenance on their 3000gt and blame reliability. A single overhead cam reflects performance.

Re: SOHC vs. DOHC

(SOHC is a 97+ base model. 161hp vs. the DOHC 222 in the SLs and pre97 base.) And what Aces said is correct. They are reliable enough, the question is if the owner was good to his/her ride. And 13 grand is steep for that...you really could find a vr4 for that much

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.
