Exhaust Prollems!!!!

Does anyone know how many horses I can gain by taking out the u-bend in the exhaust with the O2 sensor in it?.....Seems like a major restriction to me and I would like to cut that bend out....replace with straight piece of pipe and install the sensor into the new piece.
I would like to know if anyone has done this and if so......any pointers?
Thanks,
Phil.

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

Phil,

Ubend removal is a very common mod.

No pointers other then what you just described, find a shop to cut the bend out and weld in a new pipe.

PFYC also sells a replacement pipe - http://www.pfyc.com/store/merchant.m...ory_Code=GPEXH

You won't really add any horses to your car by doing this....but
you will make it easier for aftermarket performance products to add horses later.

A free flowing Exhaust is a must for performance in a car....and the Ubend is definatley a hinderance

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

Actually one of the vendors tested a 5hp increase on the dyno by removing the u-bend. Nobody has done it for a gtp, but it only makes sense that it would build more power.

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

If the ubend is replaced as you describe, and the O2 sensor is now sticking out sideways rather than on top, what are the chances of the O2 sesor getting ripped out, like say by deep snow? (I'm i Michigan and we get that sometimes).

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

I've never heard of a case of the o2 sensor being damaged after the u-bend replacement. I've been on clubgp since 01.

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

That's very good news. Thanks for your response.

Gonna do this and remove the resonator and see how much better it gets. Gas is expensive these days you know.

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

I'd leave the resonator on unless you put some different mufflers...I heard a sound clip of a GTP with no u-bend and no res and it sounded rather like a lawnmower to me.

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

You wouldn't have a link to that sound bite would you? I'd be interested in hearing a V6 lawn mower! ;-)

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

It's on the forum somewhere...Ripn12s posted it the other day. I'm serious...it didn't sound all that great.

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

GTPGirl,
I found the site in the forum. It's at: http://www.rmcgp.com/exhaust

And I think that you are correct. Without the resonator, the sound sucks, so the resonator is gonna stay at least until a cat back system is put in.

Thanks for the heads up! This saved me from making a mistake.

Erik.

Re: Exhaust Prollems!!!!

A-ROC,
I've already ordered the ubne replacement pipe from pfyc.com, and it'll be put on the next time it's in the shop, along with Mobile 1, new filter, LUB the suspension points, and roatate the tires (typical 3K maint).

Erik.
