Re: power difference with cams?

You need to get a 4-1 header before you think about cams.

Very true. but just for your information--cams are on of the toughest things to decide on when upgrading your car. If your car is going to be all motor then the best cams that i know of are the Competition cams 57200 for the gsr. The provide for an increase of 19hp and 10 ft-lbs on a stock motor. Cams requre the correct timing and tuning so you got to know what your doing or find a shop that does.

btw these cams offer the hp and torque gains as early as 3000rpm that last all the way to the red line which very impressive for a motor like the b18c

Did you feel a difference after installing this manifold? Did you dyno? Ive heard that the skunk 2 manifold is not a good idea for the gsr because the stock flows just as well and your actually losing power early in the powerband. Prove me wrong??

p.s Cams are definatly worth the money but, again, they require tuning.

Re: power difference with cams?

i didnt dyno, but i felt a little difference if that. the tanabe exhaust sound nice, its the hyper spec. i just wanted some cams that'll make the b18c a bit more responsive and aggressive. i want to go boosted, but thats later on down the road thats why i havent installed a header yet

the set up that i am doing is the skunk 2 intake manifold and matching it with the skunk 2 turbo cams. the stock gsr manifold is very restirctive and is about one of the best mods you can do for your money on the gsr. also those cams are badass but until i put my turbo on my car it will be slow as shit.

You need to put on a header before you get cams, cams basically just increase the flow through the motor, but the exhaust manifold will become a bottle neck. It is very important that you swap it for a header. Without swapping it you will not see very good gains with the cams.

Re: power difference with cams?

I completely agree with whtteg. And to answer your question, YES you definitly will see a power increase with those cams, springs, retainers. And with the chipped ecu, your motor will be able to rev higher. I'd say do it if you have the money and know what your doing.

'01 itr cams, and '98 jdm 4-1 header + tuning gained 16whp on my gsr.

If you plan on the stage2 cams, springs/retainers, I myself would complement that setup with the best header there is!! look for a toda/smsp/hytech etc!!!!!!

some headwork, and a bump in the compression would wake it up...but i'd say you're on the right track to a nice setup!!

Re: power difference with cams?

The biggest problem people run into when they put in cams is that they did not bump the compression ratio up any. It is important to up the C/R. When you install aftermarket cams they will lower your dynamic compression ratio. For instance I have a set of crower 62404 cams for my car. Teh spec are as follows: Duration is 243/241 and lift is .445/.434 but the thing youi want to look at is when the intake valve closes which with these cams the intake valves close at 34.0 ABDC. Now with these cams my dynamic C/R will end up being 8.49:1. My motor started out with 9.2:1. See the effect cams have on dynamic c/r?

Glad you through that in whtteg, did not know that was required. Nice to see people take it one step further.
