speed chips

I own a '96 honda accord, automatic, V4. I was thinking about buying one of thoughs speed chips that you can get on ebay real cheap. It says all you need to do is put it in and you'll get 15 more HP like that. For some reason I find this hard to believe, and if it's true, I'm wondering if it may hurt my car at all. Anyone have any thoughts on the this?

Re: speed chips

Its just a hoax, don't buy into it. All it does it just change the readings from the IAT and says its a different temp, and therefore changes the fuel-air ratio. It really won't hurt, except maybe giving you a slightly more rich mixture, but it won't give you enough power to make it worth it.

Re: speed chips

hmm well being me, I ordered the thing before I waited for the advice. So I'm hoping for some redemption from someone. Anyone have one of these and think that it works at least semi-well?

Re: speed chips

all it does on an Accord is at part throttle (nothing at wide open when it would actually matter), is pump more fuel into the cylinders and basically waste gas.....it advances the timing a very very small amount. It also depends on how it's installed. If it is installed in PLACE of the IAT sensor, than it can actually hurt performance could potentially cause damage for a lot of reasons. If it is wired in-line with the sensor, then it is potential that it could be too high of a resistance, and cause problems, but it'll likely just waste gas.

All those kids are selling is either a resistor, or a black box with a resistor inside of it. Nothing that fancy, and it wouldn't be so much of a hoax if it actually worked for the cars they sold it for, and if they didn't make it out to sound like it's going to add all this power..

blah blah, anyhow, in the end, don't buy one.

Re: speed chips

Yeah any chips or tuning equipment sold on ebay is cheap sh!t, don't get it, all it does is lie to your ECU, makes you dump fuel and run rich. It wastes gas and can actually hurt performance as others have said.

Re: speed chips

hmm well I learned my lesson, I don't know what it was, but I decided to install it at least just for a little bit to see what would happen and what do you know, the check engine light goes on the next day. hmm...
