You may want to try a 30-35.. 44 is really way to much.. Lower pressure will give you a better ride..

It is best to go just a LITTLE under the max. I would say that 30-35 psi is to low. Try 37-40...just keep trying it until it feel right. With having a 16" rim...you may damage it...you don't have alot of sidewall on your tire.

When I auto-x I usually take mine up to about 50psi for the added support.

Either way.. I know many peeps running 29-30 PSI with 205/40/17's They said they feel perfect without the hard pull to the side like what it was doing with more pressure.. I say play with it and see what you like the best.. You are going to want to run more for AutoX because itll stiffen your sidewall and prevent roll, but you probably dont want that in every day driving...

Most autoxers even with true track tires don't jack up their pressures much more than 36 psi. I would recommend Racing Rices settings.

Keep it a bit higher in the front.
I ran 36F and 32R with my S03s.
They have a 51 psi max, but I would never ever run them over 40psi even racing.

As far as the side wall, with that 45 profile, what sidewall?
I have my Avids with a 65 profile right now and I roll those things like I making a pizza, and I never rolled on my rim.
(Even semi-drifting through a parking lot.)

I have p7000 supersports 225/40/18. Max is 44psi. I have been runnin 38-40 psi. Is this too high. Kauffman Tire put 42 psi (cold) in them when i got them. Thanks for help. I just don't want premature tire wear from under or overinflated tire.

Like I said high pressures like that are really not a good idea for daily driving, it puts a lot more wear and stress on the tire, especially when you are not using those high pressures to drop lap times
You will wear faster and it will increase the likelyhood of a sidewall blowout at higher speeds.

I thought I'd post from my point of view. If you really want to save your wheels from potholes and road hazards I put in 37-39psi in my tires. In the short run yeah you will have a rougher ride but your $800 rims will be protected better.

You will also get better mpg and less rolling resistance.

Re: Tire Pressure

I've got Cooper 2XS 205/40/17, max pressure is 50.... I've been running 45 in them, and they're burning up real fast.... Dobbs brought them back to my car's factory recommended pressure (32 front 35 rear), that's where I bought the tires. Should I just leave it at that? It's mostly commute, but I like to run with people occasionally, and hit the turns hard.

Re: Tire Pressure

A bit of overinflation is helpful for increased handling - but only up to a point.

Reading the posts above (yes, I know they are 3 years ago) no one suggested that he look at his placard for the proper inflation pressure. I'm going to guess the tires on CX-R's car are smaller and really needs to be around 40 psi to carry the load.

Re: Tire Pressure

Keep mind, the pressure will increase as the tires get hotter. If you put 40 psi in them...chances are after a nice drive on the freeway during the summer, they'll be a good amount over the max pressure of 44psi.

Yes the pressures on the sidewall are for cold tires, but I always like to play it safe...considering I hate it when tires blow out or wear weird from different amounts of heat.

Yes, the pressures on the sidewall are cold. I really wouldn't worry about the tires "blowing" just because of the inflation pressure. Typical static burst pressures on P metric tires is well over 100 psi. Certainly, tires are more "impact" prone at higher inflation pressures, but too little is just as bad. I think it's more important to worry about heat build up, which will decrease as you increase pressure. Certainly, if you are getting too much pressure buildup, you ought to go to a larger tire size.

What ought to be the goal is a balance between too much and not enough.

BTW most tire wear occurs in the cornering mode (slip angle), and while heat plays a factor in abrasion resistance of a compound, the slip angle plays a much larger role in both the amount of wear and how evenly the wear is.

Hope this helps.
