92 1500 4x4 rear end problem

the rear end whines when decelerating, I thought I had fixed it how ever, I guess I havent. Also thinkin about replacing the spider gears in the carier. I dont know the back lash these are supposed to have. I have replaced the ring and pinion with a new gm gear.

So my q's are this?

1. what adjustment, do I make to take away the whine

2. how much back lash are there supposed to be on the carrier gears.
Chilton doesnt say???

Thanks

Re: 92 1500 4x4 rear end problem

the carier gears don't do anything unless you drive around a corner. did you properly adjust the pinion preload??? the backlash on the ring gear should be around .007" to .011" check with a dial indicator. did you check the gear tracking with grease??http://autorepair.about.com/gi/dynam...2Finstall.html
this site has a fairly good explination of the process. diff gears are a real pain to set up properly i usually just swap in a junkyard one with low miles. chevy diffs are notorious for whinning especially if you have a topper the noise resonates usually between 40mph to 60mph.
